7 Area Rug Rules for a Designer Look
Admire rooms that seem to whisper “designer touch” from every corner? Today, let’s explore ways we can add that coveted designer look with area rugs.
When aiming for an area rug with a designer look, be sure to consider these points:
Select the Best Style/Type
Choosing a style of rug: floral, abstract, geometric, tribal, Moroccan, transitional, to name a few, is perhaps the first step in achieving that desired designer look. Select a rug that looks great and is suited to your room and how you use it. For instance, a high traffic area needs a rug that’s durable and easy to clean.
Choose the Right Size
A designer would be sure to select the right size area rug in proportion to the size of the room. You want the rug to fit into the space, but you also want to be sure it’s big enough that it doesn’t have a postage-stamp look to it. That’s how a too-small rug looks.
Look for Appropriate Pattern
Be sure the pattern you choose will fit into the style of your room. There is a great deal of leeway here, with a lot of transitional looks available right now and patterns that harmonize well with several styles.
Color that Works
Pay special attention to colors in the rug you choose. Here again, you have lots of options to choose from. You can go neutral with a rug that adds depth to your room but blends beautifully into its decor. Go big and bold with splashes of color that add a lively vibe to your space but work well with the room’s already established color palette.
Rug Pad
Once you've selected the most appropriate rug for your space, the right style, size, pattern, and color, then find out if the manufacturer of your area rug recommends a rug pad. Many area rugs don’t need a pad under them; for some, a pad is not recommended at all and would detract from the look and feel of the rug. If a rug pad is needed, ask the rug store to help you choose the right type and size for your rug.
Placement within the Room
How you position an area rug within your room is of utmost importance for maximizing that designer look. For a bedroom rug, be sure it isn’t almost covered up by the bed or other furniture. Otherwise, you won’t be able to enjoy the look and feel of the rug. In the living room, place the rug so that at least the front legs of the sofa are on the rug. Having all four legs of the sofa on the rug will probably give you a more finished look. In the dining room, position your rug centered under the table and be sure all chairs can rest with all four legs on the rug.
Maintenance
So that your beautiful area rugs always have that designer look, each should be maintained meticulously. Vacuum regularly, top, and bottom. Immediately take care of liquid and solid spills. Clean area rugs as needed to maintain them in pristine condition. Soiled rugs, even the most beautiful or expensive, do not in any way have a designer look.
