The Average Cost of Rugs: Are You Overpaying for Retail?
Give us good value for our money--that’s all we ask. (Well, that and a fabulous area rug.) Regardless of our financial circumstances or the size of our interior decorating budget, we ALL want to get the best value for the money we spend. That’s also true when it comes to purchasing beautiful area rugs to bring comfort underfoot.
How can you be sure you aren’t overpaying, especially when buying at retail prices? How much should you expect to spend on a rug? The price varies, as with most home decor pieces, depending on the quality, materials, and size.
Keep in mind size will play a huge part in increasing the price of any rug. The disparity between the smallest to the largest rugs in any style is considerable.
Here are some ideas on average cost and commiserate value to guide you as you shop for area rugs:
High-End Rugs (handmade, antique, luxury, high-quality wool or silk, designer rugs)
Quality rugs will, generally speaking, start at around $500 and can go all the way up to $10,000 and even far more for a very high end, luxury rug. Gorgeous antique rugs fit into this category. Handmade rugs are always more costly because of the high quality of workmanship and because of the time-intensive labor. Many high-end rugs are made by experienced artisans who have been honing their craft for years. That’s one of the many benefits of being able to own one of these superior rugs.
Mid-Range Rugs (mixed-material rugs, hand-woven of cotton or other less expensive yarn)
These moderately priced rugs will probably be in the range of $150 to $400 depending on size. Though not in the luxe category, area rugs in the mid-range can look good, and some have textures that have a comfortable feel. You can find colors and patterns that please in this category.
Lower-Price Rugs (outdoor plastic rugs, machine-woven synthetic rugs, and such)
You’ll be able to find budget-priced rugs for less than $100, but always remember when considering these affordable rugs that you almost always get what you pay for. Here you will see brightly colored rugs with cheerful modern patterns or those with neutral color palettes in solids or simple designs. No luxury textures to be found here, but happy colors and patterns to make you smile abound.
No matter the range, you can avoid overpaying for rugs at retail prices by doing your due diligence research, taking time to see what’s available and where then making a wise, considered decision using your head and your heart. After all, whether you overpay or find a real bargain, you’ll be happier with your purchase if you find a rug you genuinely love, one you’ll enjoy for many years to come.
